Graphite is one of the raw materials used in pencil leads. Due to its heat resistance, it can also be applied to moulds when casting materials at high temperatures – such as liquid metals – so that the casting can be easily removed from the mould.

Technical Data

Unlike diamond, graphite is an electrical conductor. Due to the relative softness of the material and its (self-)lubricating properties, it is used in electrical engineering in sliding contacts, including in electric motors (as carbon brushes), in current collectors and in potentiometers. Another application is its use as a material for electrodes in electrochemical cells, for example in the isolation of aluminium from bauxite, or in the electrolysis of aqueous solutions. Nowadays, graphite is also used in plastics for guitar combs and bridge saddles because of its self-lubricating properties, which reduce string friction and thus improve tone stability. For the same reasons, graphite powder is also used as a dry lubricant in (cylinder) locks, hinges and (fine) mechanisms, and is particularly suitable as a lubricant where the temperature of the (moving) parts can rise to high levels.
