Polishing is the application of the polish on wood so that a thin, shiny film arises. A cotton cloth is used to rub the liquid on the wood. The ethanol evaporates quickly, so that in a short time several layers can be applied in succession.
Sometimes powdered pumice is used to fill the wood pores, and mineral oils to make the rubbing process easier.
Finishing the wood with a polish increases the depth of the wood grain (chatoyance-effect). On the other hand, it is labour-intensive to apply and the polish is not resistant to heat (>60°C), alcohol or long exposure to water.
