Shellac is produced by refining seed lac (the exudate of the insect Kerria lacca, kerr., Fam. Coccidaea.).

It is used as:

Wood treatment
binder for ink
as an abrasive
fitting cement for light bulbs
mostly as coating and glazing agent
binder for pyrotechnics
dental plates
film former in hairspray
hair setting and nail polish
binder in mascara
micro-encapsulation of fragrances.
