Type

Chavant modeling clays are used throughout a variety of industries in many different and unique ways. Chavant clays are oil/wax based and do not permanently harden. The clays are not meant to be fired and when working with these clay bodies a user is not working on the final project. The finished clay will have some sort of mold taken from the clay’s surface and some other permanent material is cast out of the mold.

Technical Data

Chavant Clay NSP is a sulphur-free, slightly harder, waxy modelling clay, primarily used in fine arts and special effects. It is sulphur-free to allow casting in various silicone moulds. Available in soft, medium and hard. On a scale of 1 to 10, soft is 4, medium is 7 and hard is 8.

This clay has high adhesion and flexibility. As the clay is slightly harder, you can easily sculpt fine details into it. NSP clay can be melted for casting, as well as for brushing or spraying. The melting point is approximately 80°C. As the NSP clay is heated, it naturally becomes softer, but also stickier. A little water, citrus-based solvents, thinner, turpentine or white spirit helps to make the surface soft and smooth again.

Chavant Clay Le Beau Touché Original and HTR (High Temperature Resistant) are two very different products with very similar characteristics. Both are sulphur-free modelling clays designed specifically for their exceptional smoothness and adhesion. The LBT range is mainly used by artists looking for a product that adheres to just about any surface, including aluminium wire, aluminium foil, cardboard, foam or paper. Both offer excellent detail, are easy to work with, have high flexibility and will not dry out or crack. The Chavant LBT HTR is preferred by artists in warmer climates (above 30°C). It is very similar to the LBT Original, but slightly harder and less sticky at room temperature.

The LBT Original can be heated to soften it, but this also makes it stickier; the LBT HM can be heated to soften it and can still be worked well up to around 40°C.

Clayette modeling clay is sulfur-free, non-hardening, odor-free and flexible without being sticky. The color is Off white.

Handling tips: Using small amounts of citrus-based solvents, lighter fluid, latex paint removers, turpentine or mineral spirits as a lubricant on the surface of the clay will help to attain a smooth surface. Working Temp: Clayette is generally used at room temperature but can be warmed to soften.

Monu-Melt™ (Meltable Clayette) brings all of the qualities of Clayette – a sulfur-free, non-hardening, tack-free, odor-free, and flexible clay – into a formula that can be melted and applied to a CNC foam armature by brush. By popular demand this material has been introduced in a Dark Forest Green color.

Monu-Melt ™ should be melted in a range from 180-200°F. Keeping the clay above 200°F will result in bubbling of the liquid clay. This bubbling is mostly aesthetic, and will not affect the characteristics of the cool clay.

ContourTM Clay is a precision sculpting medium that shapes, smooths, and carves easily to hold exceptional surface detail.

ContourTM Clay can be hand sculpted or tooled and applied to armatures of any size from tiny miniatures to giant monuments and memorials. ContourTM Clay scales up beautifully without sacrificing crisp edges or quality. The warm gray color helps facilitate viewing profile lines and surface textures when sculpting. Ultra-Fine detailing is most effective with room temperature clay (72F/23C).

Due to its higher temperature resistance, the ContourTM Clay Series will resist deformation when working in warmer studio environments for year-round sculpting projects. When softened this clay series has a buttery smooth consistency similar to sulfur-clays but remains silicone friendly for moldmaking.

Warmed ContourTM Clay is easily spread or troweled onto carved EPS foam and mixed material armatures for use as a shapeable coating.
